More Smartphone Users

Global smartphone growth is to exceed 55% this year as the gadgets become increasing popular with consumers. Phones such as the Apple iPhone and HTC Desire are being snapped up, according to figures from IDC, with the smartphone market expected to exceed the overall mobile market fourfold.

Overall, smartphone sales are expected to stand at a massive 472 million in 2011, compared to 305 million last year. The data also showed that phones which use the Android operating system are likely to prove increasingly popular, accounting for a 40% market share by the end of the year as brands like Samsung make use of the software.

Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst at IDC said: “The smartphone floodgates are open wide. Mobile phone users around the world are turning in their ‘talk-and-text’ devices for smartphones as these devices allow users to perform daily tasks like shopping and banking from anywhere.”
