iPhone is on Top

Market tracker NPD reported Thursday that Apple’s iPhone 4 was the top selling mobile phone in the United States. Apple can thank Verizon’s iPhone for its success. The iPhone 4 was the top selling smartphone in the United States during the first quarter, NPD said, followed by the iPhone 3GS, Motorola Droid X, HOTC EVO 4G, and HTC Droid incredible.

Apple ’s share of the mobile phone market hit 14 percent in the United States during the first quarter, NPD reported, trailing only Samsung, with 23 percenet of the market, and LG, with 18 percent.Android fell to 50 percent of smartphone unit sales in the first quarter from 53 percent in the fourth quarter (The Nielsen Company, by contrast, asserts that momentum is on Android’s side). Apple’s share of the market rose to 28 percent from 19 percent.

The stakes are high: for the first time most new U.S. handsets sold were smartphones. First quarter smartphone sales rose 8 percent over the prior quarter, while unit sales of handsets fell 1 percent, according to NPD.
