Apple Leads In The U.S.

According to market research firm Canalys, Apple was the top smartphone vendor in the United States during the third quarter of 2010.

Apple sold 5.5 million iPhones, representing 26.2 percent of the U.S. market, to beat Research in Motion’s 5.1 million BlackBerrys sold.

The Open Handset Alliance, comprising of all smartphone manufacturers that use Google’s Android mobile operating system, leads the pack with 9.1 million units, or a 43.6 percent share.

On a side note, Nokia led the worldwide list with 33 percent of the market, some distance from Apple’s 17 percent and Research in Motion’s 15 percent.
