Recent Smartphone Usage

Big-time research firm Nielsen revealed that smartphone use was up by 23% in the first quarter of 2010, to 25% of the US mobile phone population. Neilson said that the increase was a direct result of more people wanting to access the internet on the go in order to do a variety of things such as social networking, mobile banking, and merely surfing the web. eMarketer ran some projections of their own and said that 85.5 million mobile users will be accessing the web from handsets this year.

“Mobile internet usage will increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.7%, much faster than the CAGR of 2.1% expected in mobile subscribers over the same period,” the company said in a statement.

This increase in smartphone use is fertile ground for banks if they choose to launch Mitek’s Mobile Deposit. By offering Mobile Deposit, banks and credit unions become much more versatile. They will be able retain their current customers all while expanding and reaching additional ones.
